On Wednesday, May 4, Harriett Poindexter Mason, surrounded by her children, passed away peacefully in the room where she was born 88 years ago. She was the wife of the late James Lacy Mason Jr. for 62 years.

Mrs. Mason was in born Charlotte County, April 10, 1934, a daughter of the late John Robinson Poindexter and Janie Pillow Poindexter. She lived most of her life in the Old Well Community, gave her life to Jesus at a young age and was baptized in the millpond. She remained a faithful member of Midway Baptist Church, where she led the “Circle”, taught Sunday School, Bible School, Acteens, GAs, RAs, sang in the choir and more.

Mrs. Mason attended Randolph-Henry High School and Madison College (JMU), where she graduated with a double major in Education and Art. She taught Kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd grades for nearly 50 years, including as a substitute.

She is survived by a son, James R. Mason (Laura) of Phenix; two daughters, JaneE Mason Harris (Randall) of Madison Heights and Laura Lee Mason Cook (Randy) of Phenix; three grandsons, Ryan, Aaron and Gabriel Murphy; a brother, John Poindexter (Betty); a sister, Coleen Andrews, all of Phenix; sisters-in-law, Janet, Sarah and Geraldine Mason; brother-in-law, Parker Dodd; special care givers, Donna, Renee, Haley, Terri and many others; 20 nieces and nephews and thousands of former students.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean P. Driver (Frank) and June Bayton (E.L.); a brother, Jack Poindexter (Edith); brothers-in-law, Hugh Andrews, Buck, Gibbs and Keith Mason and sister-in-law, Mamie Dodd.

A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 7, at Midway Baptist Church, by the Rev. Chris Kesler, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Midway Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
