Pastor William R. Holcomb Jr., 69 of Chase City, entered eternal rest on Thursday, Sept. 9, at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.

William was born in Charlotte County on June 6, 1952 to the late Robert Holcomb Sr. and Gertrude Diggs. He was a graduate of Randolph-Henry High School. He worked in the lumber industry beginning at Lindsey Sawmill. From there, he worked at Spaulding Lumber until the company went out of business. He then continued his employment at Appomattox River Company until the company closed. Until his health failed, he worked for a temporary work agency performing a variety of tasks.

William was baptized in Jesus’ name on Nov. 5, 1981 at the Holy Name Church of Jesus, Baltimore, Maryland. Soon after, he received the precious gift of the Holy Ghost according to Acts 2:38. William loved singing and praising God. At Holy Name Church of Jesus, Chase City, he served as a deacon, usher, choir member, elder, assistant pastor and in 2018 became pastor.

In 1982, William married his loving wife of 39 years, May Bell. William enjoyed spending time at home with his family. He was a devoted father to his stepson and two daughters. William enjoyed antique car shows and could list many makes and models. He loved sharing childhood stories of times with his siblings and other family members. Many times, he couldn’t get all the stories told without laughing. William was a “Gentle Giant” – selfless, loving, kind-hearted, easily entreated and loved by many. He was affectionately called “Hun Hun” by his wife.

Pastor Holcomb leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, May Bell Holcomb; one stepson, Quentin Baskerville Sr. (Pamela) of South Hill; two daughters, Shannon Winslow (Jakob) of Huachuca City, Arizona and Christie Holcomb of Chase City; five grandchildren, Quentin Jr., Quanetia, Jayquan, Eliana and Elijah; two brothers, Carl Holcomb (Margie) of Mechanicsville and Ryan Holcomb (Vada) of Louisa; one sister, Brenda Burton of Chase City; three brothers-in-law, Dandy “Daniel” Watson (Louise) of Chase City, Larry Watson of Fort Mitchell and Harvey Harris of Saxe; Holy Name Church of Jesus church family and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.

Graveside services for Pastor William R. Holcomb, Jr. will be conducted 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 3, at Woodland Cemetery, Chase City. Public viewing will be held on Saturday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. A mask is required for all viewings and services.
