Weekend events mark anniversary of battle

The Historic Staunton River Foundation and the Staunton River Battlefield State Park will commemorate the 157th Anniversary of the Battle of Staunton River Bridge in Halifax and Charlotte counties Saturday, June 26.

All events are free and open to the public and located at Clover Visitor Center at the Staunton River Battlefield State Park located at 1035 Fort Hill Trail, Randolph, Virginia (Halifax County Clover Visitor Center entrance).

From 10 to 10:30 a.m. the Historic Staunton River Foundation will present commemorative medals to recognized descendants of the participants of the Battle of Staunton River Bridge. Following the medal presentation, a wreath-laying ceremony will be presented by local heritage organizations at the bridge.

From 10:30 to 11 a.m., a guided Fort Hill tour and narration will begin near the bridge.

Learn more about the valiant deeds of men and women from the area who helped defend the bridge, the military tactics behind the attack, and those who helped build the earthen fortifications.
