The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 570 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the commonwealth Tuesday, June 9 and five new deaths as a result of the virus.

VDH reported one new case in Charlotte County, up one from 28 cases reported on Monday, June 8.

During the Monday, Charlotte County Board of Supervisors meeting Phenix/Aspen supervisor Donna Fore expressed her concern with the rising numbers.

“The numbers keep going up,” Fore said. “Twenty-eight cases are disturbing to me. Are we not getting the message out about wearing masks, washing hands, and not going out?”

To date, there have been no deaths from the virus in the county, and four reported hospitalizations.

Statewide, VDH is reporting 51,738 positive cases and 1,496 deaths.

The positive case number is expected to increase greatly this week according to Public Information Officer Robert Parker with VDH.

Starting on June 9, the VDH COVID-19 data dashboard will reflect 13,000 additional tests that were backlogged. Over the next couple of days, this new information will be slowly added to the current data, which will result in an influx of results.

Parker said a Richmond area laboratory had previously been providing test results via fax, which had to be entered manually by VDH staff, contributing to the backlog.

“VDH staff had prioritized positive test results, which means the remaining backlog largely includes negative tests. The lab is now submitting test results electronically.” Parker said, “This change alleviates by half the reporting backlog of test results.”
