Patrick Henry’s Red Hill, located in Charlotte County, has been named one of 110 grant recipients as part of the CARES Act given by Virginia Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Part of the CARES Act passed by Congress in March, is designed to provide emergency operating funds to humanities-based organizations such as Red Hill that are struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As a cultural non-profit organization, this will allow our employees to further grow our missions of education in new and different ways during this COVID crisis,” Director of Community Engagement of Red Hill Myra Trent said.

According to Trent, the grant will be used to help with payroll.

“The full-time employees continue to work on new ways to promote Red Hill,” Trent said. “Although our doors to the public have been closed, our employees continue to work.”

Trent said that since the beginning of the pandemic and the fact that the ground was closed for a while, employees have worked to host blood drives, make educational packets for the local schools, and complete much-needed repairs to the buildings.

“Our next steps include reimagining our digital presence and a redesign of our visitor guide,” she said.

According to Trent, Red Hill opened to the public on Friday, May 15, but under several guidelines.

Social distancing is strongly encouraged, and no groups larger than 10 people are allowed.

All buildings are currently still closed to visitors except the visitors center.

Visitors are welcome to picnic on the property, and dogs are welcome, but must remain on a leash at all times.

Red Hill’s new hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
