The Central Middle School (CMS) ART 8 class was invited to participate in the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) “Paint a Plow” project this year. Part of the VDOT and Your Neighborhood platform that highlights information about local maintenance, this activity is one that CMS students found exciting and memorable. Mrs. Queensberry’s students chose to highlight the CMS Bobcat as their design for the plow. Students worked together to agree on the design and to work the design out on paper, which was then transferred onto the plow for painting. The work on the plow was done in October and, taking turns, every student in class participated in the painting. This project called for the use of oil-based and spray paints – mediums seldom used in middle school art classes. Queensberry says that this experience has prompted many students to buy their own sets of oil-based paints for their own work. The students worked diligently to create a plow that beautifully represents both the school and the great art department.
