As so often occurs in the annals of human history, especially in times of war, seemingly unbelievable and incomprehensible coincidences occur more often than not. Classic case in point, the McLean family during the American Civil War witnessed the start of hostilities erupt in their front yard (Manassas) and end four years later in their front parlor (Appomattox Court House) where they had moved to escape the fighting.

On April 6, 1865, the Battles of Sailor’s Creek experienced several instances of uncanny, inexplicable coincidences leading up to, during and following what became known as the last major fight of the Civil War in Virginia.

Chief Ranger Lee Wilcox will share stories about these “strange but true” occurrences for visitors on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m., inside the Battlefield Visitor Center. This is a family-friendly, free admission program.
