We were moved by the naturalization ceremony that took place at the Patrick Henry National Memorial on May 29, and we want to take a moment to celebrate the people involved in that ceremony and to celebrate what the event represents.

As we reported, 30 people from 21 countries became U.S. citizens during the event that represented the end of a landmark journey.

Christina Witcher spoke during the ceremony, noting that her journey to citizenship took a long time but that the experience had been worth it.

“I started this journey from my very small village in Ghana 30 years ago,” she said. “This is the day that the Lord has made, and I will rejoice.”

Though it seems easy for many to become caught up in cynicism about America these days, many would still agree that the country provides a unique opportunity for its citizens to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

We commend these 30 people for doing what it took to properly embrace that opportunity, and we offer them a warm welcome.
