Randolph-Henry High School’s varsity softball team has endured a rough start to the 2018 season, but a roster featuring a mixture of young and seasoned players exploded on offense right before spring break, showing the promise the season could yet hold.
The Lady Statesmen were 0-6 entering their home game Tuesday against Goochland High School, and through their first five games this season, they had lost each of them by at least nine runs, but March 30, they broke loose, scoring 17. Visiting Bluestone High School still won 20-17, but the precedent had been set that Randolph-Henry could produce and be competitive.
The 2018 squad includes six seniors, five sophomores, two juniors and one freshman.
The seniors are outfielder/second baseman Casey Arrington, second baseman/outfielder Shelby Meyer, outfielder Tori Washington, third baseman/first baseman/pitcher Hannah Pasciuta, outfielder Anna Pasciuta and catcher/outfielder Anna Cary.
The pitching staff includes Hannah Pasciuta, sophomores Megan Davis and Alyssa Rapole and freshman Najada Robertson.
D.J. Jack transitions over from coaching the varsity girls basketball team to leading the varsity softball squad this year.
The Lady Statesmen face Buckingham County High School at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Buckingham County Middle School.
