R-H starts 4-3

Randolph-Henry High School’s varsity boys basketball team is off to a solid start for the 2017-18 season, entering Tuesday night’s showdown at Central Lunenburg High School with a 4-3 record, having only lost to Dan River and Amherst County high schools.

The Statesmen fell 67-55 against visiting Dan River on Monday and routed visiting Amelia County High School 70-39 on Friday.

Facing Dan River for the first time this season Dec. 13, visiting Randolph-Henry (R-H) lost 67-48.

The day prior, the Statesmen recorded a 50-34 James River District road victory over Prince Edward County High School.

Randolph-Henry Head Coach James Graves noted the game featured a slow first half, with the Statesmen leading 19-17 at halftime. They stretched the lead to eight points in the fourth quarter, forcing the Eagles to play man-to-man defense.

R-H senior guard/forward Tremaine Pugh scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half. He also had six rebounds for the game.

Senior guard Jordan Jones added 14 points, senior guard Nasheim Pettus had eight points and six steals and senior forward Billy Brantley Jr. chipped in four points and seven boards.

In a 59-50 win over visiting Bluestone High School on Dec. 5, Pettus had 16 points and seven assists, while Pugh added 11 points and 10 boards.

They contributed 15 points apiece to a 70-44 home win over Gretna High School on Dec. 1.
