A joint public hearing regarding a conditional use permit for the construction of a proposed Dollar General Store in Wylliesburg has been set for Aug. 7 at 7 p.m.

The hearing will be held by both the board of supervisors and planning commission in Charlotte County.

The store is proposed to be constructed beside the Tastee Freez in Wylliesburg, located at 87 Hebron Church Road, according to a conditional use permit application for the project.

The 76.42-acre parcel where the store could be located is zoned agricultural. Only three acres will be purchased for the proposed project.

County Planner and Purchasing Agent Monica Elder said there is a three-acre requirement for properties zoned agricultural, which means a conditional use permit is needed for the project.

According to the permit application, the store is being constructed by the Par 5 Development Group, LLC.

According to its website, the firm has been a preferred developer for Dollar General stores since 2009.

The most recent addition of a Dollar General store in Charlotte County occurred last June with the opening of a 9,100-square-foot store at the corner of Routes 47 and 59 in Drakes Branch, constructed by the same firm.

According to Dollar General, most of their stores have a standard 9,100 square foot size.

Previously, Dollar General’s Corporate Communications Representative Nolan Miles said that when choosing store locations, “meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority. The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice. We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three to five-mile radius, or 10-minute drive. We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration.”

In February, there were approximately 13,320 Dollar General retail locations across the U.S., according to its website.

Miles said each store will typically employ between 6-10 employees, depending on the needs of the location.

In addition, Dollar General stores support literacy and education, he said. The Dollar General Foundation “awards approximately $12 million each year to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs,” according to Miles.

An expected start and completion date has not yet been determined for the Wylliesburg project.
