Aspen/Phenix District Supervisor Haywood Hamlet, who has served on the Charlotte County board since 1990, is still in the process of seeking qualification as a candidate in the upcoming November election.

The qualification issue, stemming from the number of names Hamlet submitted to the Virginia Department of Elections, could mean no candidates will appear on the ballot for the seat.

According to Charlotte County Registrar Nan Lambert, the county is waiting for a ruling from the State Board of Elections in regards to the district’s candidate qualification.

Prospective candidates seeking to be qualified for the ballot have to file four forms, including a certificate of candidate qualifications, the declaration of candidacy, a statement of economic interest and a petition of at least 125 qualified voters.

“For as long as I’ve been on the board, this is the first time I’ve had this to happen and I can understand, you know, the rules,” Hamlet said. “What bothers me is you go out and meet people and get signatures and then you find out that they’re not registered voters and …  I don’t understand why someone would sign a petition when they’re not registered to vote and that’s what happened to me.”

Hamlet said he had turned in enough names to meet the requirement, but after the state board vetted the names enough were removed from the petition where he no longer met the set requirement.

Hamlet said if he ends up not qualified to appear on the ballot, he will run as a write-in candidate.

Charlotte County has qualified candidates in each of the other districts for both the board of supervisors and school board election.

For board of supervisors election, R.L. “Butch” Shook Jr. will run unopposed in the Keysville District.

Kay Morgan Pierantoni will be running against incumbent Warren E. Weston in the Wylliesburg District.

In the school board election, Aspen/Phenix District incumbent Kenneth W. Redmond is being challenged by Robert M. “Bobby” Johnson, Keysville District incumbent R.B. “Jay” George III will be challenged by Kenny G. Howard and candidates Teresa T. Dunnaway and Matthew W. Duffer are seeking election in the Wylliesburg/Red Oak District being vacated by William “Bill” Devin.
