As the temperatures begin to rise, Charlotte County native Jonathan Brett Morris is ready to take to the river with Riverthuggs kayak floats.

“I’ve been on the river my whole life,” said Morris. “I just want to share what I love with others.”

According to Morris, Riverthuggs is a company that specializes in area kayak river floats.

Morris said this is the third season he has been leading the floats and the usual routes are from Long Island to Brookneal and from Brookneal to Clarkton.

“All proceeds go to helping me buy a farm so I can grow fresh crops to help feed starving children,” Morris said.

He said his long-term goal is to reach children in places such as Africa and South America.

To enjoy a full day of floating on the river, Morris said the cost is $35 and includes a paddle, life vest and whistle for safety.

While floating on the river can be fun, Morris is an advocate for safety.

He said while floating the river, it’s important to avoid flooded areas, always check the weather beforehand and inspect your kayak/canoe before embarking on the journey.

Additionally, Morris said floaters should always carry a life vest and a device capable of making noise.

“We host the annual fun float day every year,” Morris said. “I also have hosted two events every summer at my base of operations.”

Morris’ base of operations is located in Phenix on Rosa Road, where signage offers directions to the location.

According to information offered by Riverthuggs, the annual open host event will be held on June 10 starting at 7 p.m. The event will include music, corn hole, horseshoes and the chance to win free prizes.

Charlotte Court House native Adrian Davis occasionally helps Morris during the floats.

“I love helping a friend when they ask,” said Davis. “What’s better than floating a river and enjoying a day? I’m glad to help when I can.”

While this is only the third float season for Riverthuggs, Morris said “the last two seasons it’s been pretty busy every weekend.”
