Randolph-Henry High School’s varsity wrestling team produced some good individual placements in the Highlander Invitational at Glenvar High School on Saturday and was competitive in an event at Heritage High School in Lynchburg on Jan. 25.

“The Highlander Invitational Tournament at Glenvar featured some of the top wrestlers from some of the top wrestling schools in the state,” Statesmen Head Coach Dean Schwartz said. “Our team worked hard, and even in the losses, our wrestlers competed till the end with the best wrestlers in the state.”

Michael Nichols placed second in the 132-pound weight class, as did Spencer Parrish in the 170-pound class.

Taking fourth place was Christopher Nichols at 126 pounds and Travis Adams at 120 pounds.

As a team, Randolph-Henry placed seventh out of 12, including Rural Retreat High School, the defending Group 1A state champions.

In Lynchburg on Jan. 25, the Statesmen defeated Liberty High School, of Bedford, 48-33, while falling 34-30 to Heritage and 72-12 to Tunstall High School.

“The wrestling team worked very hard through a very tough week to compete against three quality schools who are much larger than Randolph-Henry,” Schwartz said. “Our young wrestlers showed a lot of promise, and our experienced wrestlers did not disappoint.”

The Statesmen compete in the Quad River Conference 34 tournament Wednesday at Nottoway High School, with action set to start at 5 p.m.
