Randolph-Henry High School’s varsity wrestling team rolled with a busy schedule over the weekend and found success along the way.

The Statesmen hosted the Court House Classic on Saturday and placed sixth out of the 12 teams participating.

On Monday, Randolph-Henry competed in the James River District tournament at Bluestone High School, placing second out of six teams and producing two weight-class winners. Senior Chris Nichols won the 126-pound weight class, and junior Caleb Calhoun claimed first in the 285-pound class.

After having a first-round bye, Calhoun reached the final by pinning an Amelia County High School wrestler. In the championship match, he won by pinning Cumberland High School sophomore Kaijhaun Trent.

Nichols also had a first-round bye and advanced to the final by defeating Cumberland junior Davidrick Brooks by major decision. Nichols ended up winning the class by forfeit.

The Statesmen had four second-place finishers Saturday, including senior Zach Tharpe, who went 1-1 in the 120-pound weight class, senior John Walker, who went 1-1 in the 160-pound class, senior Spencer Parrish, who went 1-1 in the 170-pound class, and senior Franklin Morton, who had only one opponent on hand to wrestle against in the 195-pound class. 

Randolph-Henry welcomed strong competition in the Court House Classic, including teams from the area and the broader region.

The Statesmen achieved two duals victories in the Saturday event, topping Manchester High School 57-24 and defeating Washington & Lee High School, of Montross, 54-30.

Randolph-Henry fell 44-34 to Nottoway High School, 50-28 to Chatham High School and 58-18 to Appomattox County High School.

The busy Statesmen are back in action Wednesday in a quad meet at Heritage High School, and they visit Glenvar High School on Saturday.
