Despite rainy weather, the town of Charlotte Court House held its 29th annual Christmas Tree Lighting at the historic Charlotte County Circuit Courthouse on Sunday.

“Welcome to our rare indoor Christmas tree lighting,” Charlotte Court House Mayor Stephen Walker said in greeting those assembled.

This year’s tree-lighting event provided a time for reflection and remembrance for those within the community, with Walker noting recent tragedies in the county.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about what this might look like today in light of the tragedies we’ve endured as a community . . . more than just lighting the tree this year, particularly now, we should think about those families that are involved,” Walker said. “Why is really irrelevant at this point, because if you knew the answer, you wouldn’t understand it. All we can do is pray for those folks. As a community I think that’s what we need to do. This is not about Charlotte Court House or Phenix — this is about us. This is about people lifting one another up.”

Walker also asked for people to specifically remember longtime water operator and Charlotte Court House resident James Edward Stanley Sr.

“He epitomized community service,” Walker said.

Throughout the program, Rick Mann provided Christmas music with the crowd joined in on several tunes.

Walker said he appreciated citizens coming out in the weather to celebrate the community.

“That’s what it’s all about,” he said. “I invite you in the spirit of Christmas this year to serve your community.”

Holiday refreshments were served immediately following the program, including apple cider and cookies.
