The Randolph-Henry High School varsity boys basketball team defeated host Gretna High School 64-43 in Monday’s season opener, while the R-H varsity girls team fell 50-7 at home against the Lady Hawks.

James Graves, head coach of the Randolph-Henry varsity boys team, was pleased to get a win on the road.

However, he was also underwhelmed by his team’s performance, despite the lopsided nature of the outcome.

“I think we made a lot of mistakes that we shouldn’t have made, espeically on the defensive end,” he said, citing a lapse in the third quarter when he said his team gave the Hawks a few baskets.

“We did a lot of things right, it’s just that I thought we could have played better,” Graves said.

Among his positive impressions from the game, he said the Statesmen shot the ball fairly well.

Randolph-Henry junior guard Nasheim Pettus led his team with 16 points, junior guard/forward Tremaine Pugh had 12, junior forward/center Billy Brantley added 10 and senior guard Sherrek Boyd, senior forward Jesse Redd and junior guard Jordan Jones scored seven points apiece.

“We had balanced scoring,” Graves said. “We had a lot of kids putting in points.”

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Statesmen host Central Lunenburg High School, while the Lady Statesmen visit the Lady Chargers.
