Statesmen improve to 5-0

The Randolph-Henry High School varsity golf team made the first week of its 2016 season a winning one, with two tri-match victories that made the team 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the James River District.

The Statesmen’s district win streak grew to 157 games.

On Thursday, they produced a team score of 172 in a nine-hole round at the Amelia Golf & Country Club. Central Lunenburg came in second with a 208 and Amelia County took third with a 211.

“Our seniors are showing great leadership and are playing with passion and determination,” R-H Head Golf Coach Kelly Powell said.

Randolph-Henry was led by senior captain Gunnar Lacks, who shot a 42. Fellow senior captain George Sandridge shot a 43, which Nathan Towery matched. Senior Matthew Myers shot a 44, as did Eli Moore.

On Aug. 9, the Statesmen enjoyed the home course advantage at Briery Country Club, registering a team score of 148. Halifax County placed second with a score of 174 and William Campbell had a 194. The match was an exhibition for Prince Edward County, which shot a 216.

Lacks recorded an even-par 36, while Sandridge and Logan Newcomb each shot a 37. Myers and Towery each took 38 strokes apiece.

Randolph-Henry is looking to capture its 17th consecutive district championship this season and appears well on its way.

The Statesmen hosted Amelia County and Goochland on Tuesday afternoon, and they return to action Thursday when they face Central Lunenburg and Cumberland County at 3:30 p.m. at the Lunenburg Country Club.
