Appomattox Juniors Children of the Confederacy (CofC) members Autumn Shook, Austin Shook and Laural Williams traveled to Fairfax on June 10 to attend the Children of the Confederacy Virginia Division Convention.

The children traveled to the Arlington National Cemetery, visiting Arlington House on Friday. They were able to view the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and were present for the changing of the guards. Also, they became Junior Park Rangers, completing their books and receiving their badges.

During the business meeting on Saturday, CofC members were able to participate in the Catechism quizzes. Division Director Ginny Storage presented Autumn with a certificate and cash prize for winning first place in the Junior Catechism quiz. She also presented Williams with a certificate and cash prize for winning first place in the Senior Catechism quiz. 

Austin was awarded “Most Outstanding Boy CofC Member.” The CofC Organization is a chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and they strive in historical, benevolent, patriotic, memorial and educational work. Austin met all of the criteria and was awarded this honor for the Virginia Division. 

The Appomattox juniors were elected in the following Virginia Division offices for the upcoming year, Laurel, second vice president; Autumn, editor of Virginian’s Glory newspaper and Austin, treasurer. The following awards were also received, first place for the best written chapter report, first place for scrapbook, first place for the best poem and best Confederate artwork, and they tied for having the most chapter members present.

After lunch, the children participated in a Memorial Service and listened to a guest speaker who portrayed Clara Barton.
