John E. Foster, age 87, passed away peacefully into the arms of his Savior Monday, April 4, 2016 at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.  After graduating high school, he joined the United States Air Force for 4 years.  Some of his most memorable moments he spoke of were of his time on Johnston Island in the Pacific Ocean. He graduated from Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy in 1959.  In the 1960’s, John brought his family to Chilhowie to begin his career at Greever’s Drug Store, Inc. for 30 plus years.  During these years he developed long-standing friendships in the community and through his church life.  He was an active member of Riverside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and trustee.  Some of his fondest memories were about building the church’s fellowship hall.

After retiring, he enjoyed traveling to visit family back home, improving the woods around his house, cutting grass on his tractor and spending time with his grandchildren who always brought smiles to his face.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Shelton Hoyt Foster and Ruth Milton Foster; three brothers, Bruce Foster, Carlton Foster, and David Foster.  Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Jean Cutts Foster of the home; two sons, Brent Foster and wife Carolyn of Chilhowie and Scott Foster and his wife Tammi of Chilhowie; five grandchildren, Zac Foster and wife Michelle of Chilhowie, Emily Corvin and husband Ryan of Las Vegas, NV., Matthew Foster, Eden Foster and Mia Foster all of Chilhowie; two great grandchildren, Jordyn Foster and Levi Corvin; brothers and sisters, Ester Roark, Marion Huffman, Edith Pollard, Keith Foster and Milton “Buck” Foster. 

Funeral services were conducted 11AM Friday, April 8, 2016 at the Riverside Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Foster officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie. The family received friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday, April 7 at the Riverside Baptist Church in Chilhowie.
