The Charlotte County Board of Supervisors passed a motion to intend on approving a conditional use permit for a Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corp. (MBC) tower upon a favorable recommendation from the county’s planning commission in May.

Two supervisors voted against the motion — Haywood Hamlet, who serves as board chairman, and Garland Hamlett.

“We need to get the vote of the planning commission,” Hamlett said. “I’m not against doing this, I just think we need to do it the right way.”

At Tuesday’s board of supervisors meeting, a joint public hearing was held with the planning commission concerning MBC’s tower permit.

The commission didn’t have enough members in attendance to meet its quorum to make a recommendation to the board.

County Administrator R.B. Clarke said the public hearing requirement had been met and the intent to approve the future recommendation would

provide confidence to MBC to proceed with purchasing construction materials.

Planning Commission Chairman Clark Poindexter said the commission has plans to make the recommendation at an upcoming meeting this month.

“If the planning commission could not get a quorum then we need to have a called meeting and they need to have a called meeting, then vote on it,” Hamlett said.

According to County Purchaser and Planner Monica Elder, the conditional use permit is for construction of a broadband tower situated on 12.45 acres owned by Rodney Moon.

The tower lot size would measures about 2,500 square feet on the Hermon Road parcel in Saxe, said Elder.

The tower application was filed on Feb. 16. The project would include construction of a 190-foot self-supporting broadband tower.

“It’s about a three month process,” said Alfredo Echeverria, project manager for MBC’s television white space project. “We can do a lot in the meantime until we actually get the permit.”

Echeverria said the preliminary work includes purchasing necessary materials, ordering steel for construction and digging the foundation.
