Southside tops CIC, 92-75

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team improved to 5-4 on the season after topping Central International College, 92-75, on Sunday afternoon in Lawrenceville.
SVCC jumped to a 10-2 lead at the 17:12 mark of the first half behind treys from Anthony Harris and Kaimonne Douglas.
Two straight buckets by Reggie Dennis gave SVCC a 16-7 lead at the 15:31 mark.
CIC fought back to close the gap, but Harris scored five straight points for SVCC late in the half and the home team took a 41-39 lead into halftime.
Trevor Williams scored the first nine points of the second half for SVCC as it opened up a 50-44 lead on his trey at the 16:27 mark.
A rebound and putback by Jahmel Johnson and two straight buckets by Douglas extended the SVCC lead to 71-55 at the 8:23 mark of the second half.
Jones then scored on a dunk for SVCC at the 4:54 mark to extend the lead to 83-62, and the local team cruised down the stretch.
Johnson led SVCC with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Douglas scored 15 points and added two rebounds. Williams had a big game for SVCC with 14 points, 20 rebounds and seven assists, while Jones tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds and Harris added 11 points. Dennis finished with nine points, seven assists and six rebounds.
SVCC will return home on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game against Washington Academy.
