The Heart of Virginia Beekeepers will host a comprehensive class titled “Practical Beekeeping for Beginners” starting Tuesday, Feb. 2.

The class will run for eight weeks, plus a field day. Classes will be held at the Prince Edward Extension Office. Classes will be held from 7-9 p.m.

This class is specifically intended for those who plan to start honey bee colonies. Material covered will include the history of honey bees, honey bee life cycle, seasonal management, equipment and supplies needed, integrated and sustainable management techniques for optimal colony health, as well as a hands-on session for establishing new colonies.

The tuition of $90 covers one family unit, and includes three class textbooks, course notebook and CD with presentation summaries, additional resources and one year membership in local beekeeping club.
