The Randolph-Henry JV Lady Statesmen opened their season last Wednesday with a 22-8 loss to the  Prince Edward Lady Eagles.

R-H struggled early in the first quarter and the ladies played an even game with the Eagles in the second.

After a slow third quarter the ladies outscored the Eagles in the fourth.

Scorers for the Lady Statesmen were Dejah White (2), Anisha Marable (2) and Tajalin Watson (4).

Cheyanne Newcomb had eight rebounds for the games. Ty Banks grabbed six rebounds, while Alexis Wilmouth got five boards. Newcomb also led the team in steals with four.

“These girls are learning quickly about the game,” said coach Sandy Mayhew.

“Sometimes the scoreboard does not always indicate a victory, but these ladies have had small victories within the game itself. Learning to work together as a team is an integral part of the games and these ladies are doing just that.”

Next, the ladies returned home on Friday to face the Lady Raiders of Amelia, who took a 29-9 win over R-H.

Marable led in scoring with five points, including a three-pointer.

White and Newcomb each chipped in two points. Watson, Newcomb and Nikenya Black each grabbed four boards while Watson had four steals on the night.

“We have plenty of quickness but against both of the teams we faced last week we were out-sized in the height department,” Mayhew said.

“These ladies are determined and dedicated to learn more about the game. The one thing about these ladies is they always are giving 110 percent while on the court.”

R-H will host Nottoway on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
