Last Wednesday, Cameron Leighton Vassar signed his national letter of intent to attend James Madison University (JMU) next fall on a baseball Scholarship.

“Cameron is an excellent representative of us here at Randolph-Henry,” said Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Chris Holt.

Vassar joined the Varsity Statesmen baseball team as a freshman and displayed exceptional skills throughout his career at Randolph-Henry.

Last year Vassar pitched a total of 27 innings with a 4-0 record. Vassar also had 48 strikeouts and a 1.55 ERA. He received honors including first team all-district pitcher, first team all-conference catcher and second team all-conference pitcher.

“He’s one of those guys you look at as an example,” said Chris Martin of the RISE baseball organization. Based out of Midlothian, Martin recruited Vassar to play for the organization in May.

“I think he shocked a lot of the guys on some of the things he was able to do,” Martin said.

Martin said he was particularly shocked when Vassar hit 90 mph on the mound.

“Not many kids sign,” he said. “It’s one of those things where scholarships don’t come easy. It’s through a lot of hard work and he’s one of those kids that definitely put a lot of hard work into it.”

Vassar played with RISE baseball team in the summer and fall showcase tournaments at a variety of educational institutions throughout Virginia and North Carolina.

In addition to his talent on the diamond, Vassar holds a 4.1 GPA at Randolph-Henry High School and is a member of the Beta Club.

After considering several offers from different colleges, Vassar decided on JMU.

“I chose JMU because it has a great computer science program, along with an excellent baseball organization and coaching staff,” Vassar said.

Randolph-Henry head baseball coach J.R. Allen said, “I had the privilege of coaching Cameron since he was in 8th grade. Last year he had a fantastic season for us.”

Allen extended his congratulations to Cameron and the family. “You’ve worked hard for this, and this has been a dream of yours for a long time. JMU is getting an excellent guy, player, family and everything,” he said.

Cameron is the son of Cheryl and Greg Vassar of Charlotte Court House. Vassar plans to major in computer science at JMU next fall.
