The Randolph-Henry High School varsity volleyball team wrapped-up its season last week by splitting a pair of Conference 37 contests.

On Monday, the Lady Statesmen hosted Gretna in the quarterfinals of the Conference 37 tournament.

The ladies jumped out to an early lead behind four of Kierra Jones’ game-high 11 kills, three kills from Cymirra Shuford and two Jakya Pettus aces to take the first game 25-14. Gretna kept things tight in the second game, but three kills from Elizabeth Devin helped Randolph-Henry pull out that 25-22 win.

Things got even tighter for the Lady Statesmen in the third game as the Lady Hawks took an early lead and held it until late in the game.

Down 24-22, Randolph-Henry made a run, though. Paced by two Jones kills and strong serving from Devin, Randolph-Henry rallied to closeout the game 26-24 and advance to the conference semifinals on Wednesday night.

Kimmi Horsfall anchored the Statesmen defense with 16 digs while Shuford added 12.

In the semifinal match, Randolph-Henry managed only four kills in the first game as Appomattox cruised to a 25-14 win. The Lady Statesmen were not done, though.

Despite trailing early in the second game, the team picked up five team aces, including one from Hannah Pasciuta that gave Randolph-Henry a 21-18 lead.

They could not hold on, though, as the Lady Raiders finished on a 7-1 run to take the game 25-22.

Randolph-Henry continued to battle in the third, again trailing early before rallying behind two Jones kills and two aces from Pasciuta to tie the score at 19-19.

Again, it was not to be as Appomattox closed out the match with a 6-2 run and put an end to Randolph-Henry’s season, 25-21.

Lindsey Kunath led the defensive effort with 14 digs to go along with eight from Shuford and seven from Horsfall.

“I was very proud of the girls,” said head coach Shep Critzer. “The rally in the third game against Gretna and the way they came together and competed in the second and third games against Appomattox are indicative of the character and work ethic that our young ladies have. We came a long way this season as a team and as individuals and are very excited about the future of the program.”

The team finished the season 9-13 overall and 8-8 in the James River District.
