The H. A. Carrington 1055 chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, assisted by the Charlotte County Grays 1964, Sons of Confederate Veterans will hold an Iron Cross dedication on Sunday,  at 2 p.m. It will be held to honor Francis Cargill Barnes, born in 1836, who died January 27, 1910 and is buried at Hebron UM Church, located at 111 Hebron Church Road in Saxe.  Lt. Barnes was one of the “Immortal Six Hundred.”

The Immortal Six Hundred were a group of mostly confederate  officers who were prisoners of war taken from Northern prison camps and sent to Morris Island.

They became Southern heroes subjected to intentional war crimes by the U. S. Army during the closing year of the war between the states.

They were used as human shields at the bombarding of Charleston, S.C., and were intentionally starved by the U. S. Army. These prisoners became known throughout the South for their refusal to take the Oath of Allegiance.
