VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital hosted a “Pink Power Celebration” on Oct. 28 at the Christanna Campus of Southside Virginia Community College in Alberta to help raise breast cancer awareness. The event was free to the community thanks to a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central Virginia Affiliate in collaboration with SVCC.

More than 100 people participated in the event which included free health screenings of blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index and clinical breast exams. Participants also enjoyed refreshments, line dancing, free chair massages, a character artist, door prizes and a fun photo booth.

Event attendees were also educated on a variety of health related issues including how to perform breast self-exams, cancer awareness prevention, smoking cessation, cancer care, medication assistance, exercise and nutrition.

VCU Health CMH departments that provided health related information were: Women’s Health, Surgical Services, Medical Fitness, Dietician, Health & Wellness and Radiology. Other organizations represented were VCU Massey Cancer Center Resource Library from Lawrenceville, Empowering Women from SVCC and The Good Health Fairy with Beyond Boobs.
