The Randolph-Henry High School cross-country teams traveled to Occoneechee State Park on Oct. 21 to compete in the James River District Cross-Country Championships. The Runnin’ Statesmen looked for solid performances from their top runners to gear up for next week’s Courthouse Conference 37 meet in Appomattox.

The boys race was action-packed as R-H looked to try to dethrone reigning champion Goochland. All the runners had fast times with Chris Nichols (sixth), Nasheim Pettus (seventh), Michael Nichols (14th) and John Wendelin (15th) leading the way and earning All-James River District recognition. But, in the end R-H fell short and walked away with a respectable second place finish.

The girls team looked to gain some consistency in its times in preparation for next week’s big race. The two-time defending Courthouse Conference champions ran well, but could only muster a fourth-place finish. Adrianne Nelson (fourth) and Megan Garrett (14th) earned All-James River honors.

The Runnin’ Statesmen will travel to Appomattox on Wednesday for the beginning of their postseason. Runners and teams who qualify will then travel to Bristol for the Region 2A West Championships.
