This past Friday, the Randolph-Henry Statesmen took to the field against the Cumberland Dukes for their annual homecoming football game. However, there was just as much excitement leading up to the game.

During the fall months, many local schools are gearing up for Homecoming celebrations. The aforementioned occasions can be a delightful time for past graduates to catch up with old friends, make new ones and cheer your Alma Mater to victory.

According to the website Active, “early homecoming events all had similar characteristics: a football game served as a center point; the events included rallies, parades, speeches and dances; the events intended to unite alumni and students to create a stronger sense of school pride; and they were wildly successful.” This ancient idea of homecoming still holds true today.

Built in 1938, Randolph-Henry High School has been the home of many students throughout the years. As the only high school in Charlotte County, graduates of possess a sense of pride and unity. The saying “once a Statesmen, always a statesmen” holds true in this situation.

The community spirit was evident at Friday’s homecoming parade and football game. Current students, future students, past graduates and community supporters were excited to cheer the school to victory on and off the field.

Merriam-Webster said homecoming could be defined as “the act of returning to your home or to a place that is like your home” or “an annual celebration for high-school students that includes sports games and a formal dance.” In light of this, the spirit of homecoming at Randolph-Henry is not about the individual event. Memories made at homecoming can and will last a lifetime.  Win or lose, it’s all about the moment. However, it certainly added to the excitement that the Statesmen led their school to victory. Now, GO STATESMEN!
