Randolph-Henry’s varsity volleyball team went 1-2 last week and picked-up a James River District win in the process to bring its overall record to 6-9, 6-5 in the JRD.

After losing a 3-0 match on Monday to a Parkview team that had only lost one contest on the season, the Lady Statesmen returned home on Tuesday to take on Bluestone.

Randolph-Henry got things started off right in the first game. Behind three kills and three aces from Annie Sandridge and three kills and two aces from Kierra Jones, Randolph-Henry pulled ahead late to take the first set 25-21.

They continued their momentum in the second set with a 25-10 win. In the final set, the Lady Statesmen got six more of Jones’ season-high 12 kills to go with two kills each from Jakya Pettus and Cymirra Shuford to help close-out the match with a 25-19 win. Lindsey Kunath and Kimmi Horsfall led the team’s defensive effort with 9 digs apiece.

“Tuesday was a good night for us as a team,” said head coach Shep Critzer.

“I was excited to Kierra to have such a good night. Give a lot of credit to the defensive passing and setters for keying our attach and putting our hitters in position to be successful.”

On Thursday, Randolph-Henry closed out the week by hosting Goochland.

The Lady Statesmen put-up a fight against the undefeated Bulldogs in the 3-0 loss. Sandridge, Shuford and Jones combined for 13 kills and Shuford and Horsfall amassed 17 digs in effort.

“I was really pleased with the way our young ladies approached the Goochland game,” said Critzer.

“We were excited to play a team of their caliber and brought a fire and competitiveness. I thought our hitters and setters continued their progression of getting better every night, and the points we earned were of a high level. I also thought we made some excellent defensive plays against a very strong Goochland attack.”

The Lady Statesmen will travel to Cumberland High School on Thursday and will return home to face Prince Edward on Oct. 22.
