The Randolph-Henry varsity volleyball team was left wishing it was playing horseshoes last week, as they were close all week, but could not come away with the wins they wanted.

On Monday, the Lady Statesmen faced-off against Appomattox in a non-district showdown. The two teams played tight in the first game before Appomattox pulled away for a 25-19 win. The Raiders used that momentum to cruise to a 25-13 win in the second game, but Randolph-Henry rebounded in the third. Behind three aces from Lindsey Kunath and six digs from Cymirra Shuford, the Lady Statesmen cut the margin to 2-1 with a 25-23 win. Randolph-Henry continued its run in the fourth game, leading until late in the game before Appomattox got a final run that sealed the game at 25-18 and gave them a 3-1 win.

After Monday’s loss, Randolph-Henry returned home on Tuesday to host the Lady Dukes of Cumberland.

The Statesmen suffered three set losses (25-20, 25-13 and 25-20)against Cumberland, which gave the Lady Dukes the overall win.

“We played very well in stretches this week,” said head coach Shep Critzer. “Kierra (Jones) hit the ball well, and our defense continued to play strong. Of the six games we lost, we were ahead or even with the other team late in the game in five of them. The ladies are playing hard and doing a lot of good things. If we can figure-out how to play through those final points of the game, we will be right where we want to be.”

Randolph-Henry returns home on Thursday to face Buckingham at 7 p.m.
